How to Prepare Your Home for a Newborn Photo Session

Welcoming a newborn into your home is an incredibly special and joyous occasion. Those precious early days with your little one are fleeting, making it the perfect time to capture the memories with a newborn home photo session. These intimate photo sessions allow you to create lasting memories right in the comfort of your own home. To ensure your session is a success, it’s important to prepare your home adequately. In this guide, I’ll walk you through step by step how to get your home ready for a newborn home session.

Schedule the Session

The first step in preparing your home for a newborn home session is to schedule the session with a professional photographer. Schedule the session for a time when your baby is typically at their most content, which is often in the morning after feeding and nap. 10 a.m. is usually a good time for this.

Choose the Right Location

Select a room in your home with ample natural light. Ideally, this should be a space that’s warm, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing. Common choices include the nursery, the living room, or the master bedroom. As your Newborn Photographer I will help you with this when I arrive, I will be looking for the best light in the rooms of your home.

Clear Clutter and Declutter

Your home doesn’t need to be perfect. Ensure that the chosen room is clean and clutter-free. Clear away any unnecessary items that could be distracting in the background of your photos. Consider using soft, neutral colors for bedding and décor to create a soothing and timeless backdrop.

Create a Cozy Atmosphere

Newborns are particularly sensitive to temperature, so it’s vital to keep the room warm and cozy. A comfortable temperature for a newborn home session is around 24-27 degrees Celsius. This warmth will keep your baby comfortable.

Choose Simple and Neutral Decor

For a timeless and elegant look, opt for simple and neutral decor. Soft pastel colors, muted tones, and natural materials like wood and linen can create a soothing and visually pleasing backdrop for your photos.

Select Outfits and Props

Select a few outfits for your newborn to wear during the session. Keep them soft, comfortable, and free from any scratchy materials or tags. You may also want to incorporate props such as blankets, stuffed animals, or special items with sentimental value.

Safety First

Safety is paramount when photographing newborns. Ensure that all props, blankets, and accessories are free from choking hazards or sharp edges. Never leave your baby unattended on elevated surfaces, and communicate any concerns you have with your photographer.

Be Patient and Relaxed

Newborns can be unpredictable, and photo sessions may take longer than expected. Be patient and stay relaxed throughout the process. Your baby’s comfort and well-being should always come first.

Capture Candid Moments

While posed shots can be lovely, my style of photos from a newborn home session is mostly candid moments. Capture the pure essence of your baby by taking candid shots while they yawn, stretch, or gaze at you lovingly.

A newborn home photo session is a beautiful way to capture the early moments of your baby’s life in the comfort of your own home. By following these steps and guidelines, you can prepare your home and your little one for a successful and memorable session. Remember that the most important aspect of the session is to cherish these fleeting moments and create lasting memories that you’ll treasure forever. Enjoy this special time with your newborn and the wonderful journey of parenthood ahead!
