Where to Go for Your Couples Session in Melbourne

Melbourne’s a city made for wandering hearts. From wild gardens and secret city corners and to sunlit laneways, it gives us endless backdrops to play with. Whether you’re drawn to nature’s softness or the texture of city grit, the right location can set the whole tone of your session.

And here’s the good news most of the places I’m about to share don’t need a photography permit, so we can keep it spontaneous and easy.

Outdoor Locations That Feel Like a Love Letter

  1. Carlton Gardens
Right in the thick of it, yet surprisingly still. This place has old trees that arch like cathedrals, fountains that catch the light, and the beautiful bones of the Royal Exhibition Building in the background. Come in autumn when the ground is gold and the air’s a little crisp.
  2. Kings Domain
Tucked beside the Botanic Gardens (without the permit fuss), King’s Domain is a slice of city wilderness. Tall gums, winding stone paths, grassy open space it’s peaceful, romantic, and feels just a little bit secret. Dreamy in late spring and summer.
  3. Abbotsford Convent & Collingwood Children’s Farm Trails
Full of wild garden charm, weathered bricks, and that artsy, lived-in magic. You can wander through arched doorways, linger near the old walls, or dip down by the river near the farm. Springtime brings soft green leaves and wildflower, pure storybook energy.
  4. Fitzroy Gardens
Soft and whimsical, perfect for slow strolls under leafy canopies and intimate moments by ornamental ponds. The little Tudor village tucked inside is a bonus if you want something a bit quirky and old-world. Best in spring when everything’s blooming.
  5. Hosier Lane + Federation Square
For something bold and gritty. Hosier’s layered in graffiti, full of texture and edge and right around the corner, Fed Square offers clean lines, open space, and that unmistakable Melbourne city energy. Great if you want that urban love story feel.

Cosy Indoor Spots for Rainy Days or Moody Feels

  1. Your Home or AirBnB
Home is where you’re most you and sessions there feel like hanging out with your favourite person on a slow Sunday. Pyjamas, coffee, slow dancing in the kitchen. Or, book an AirBnB or hotel with a bit of character and let the light pour in.
  2. A Local Café (with their OK)
Window light, hand-holding over flat whites, that easy hum in the background. Plenty of local spots are happy for us to shoot during quieter hours, just let me reach out first. A few gems: Napier Quarter, Milton Wine Bar, or Everyday Coffee.
  3. A Bookstore or Record Shop
If you’re the kind of couple who swaps playlists and reads poetry out loud, a cosy little store could be your scene. Paperback Bookshop and Northside Records have a beautiful sense of atmosphere just ask ahead and we’re good to go.
  4. Melbourne’s Historic Arcades
Sheltered and full of old-world charm, spots like Block Arcade or Royal Arcade give us a soft, moody space to play in. Think checkerboard floors, warm light, and a touch of grandeur perfect for a dressed-up feel without leaving the city.

Timing is Everything: Light, Crowds & Vibes

Light can shape a whole session. Here’s how to choose the best time of day:

🌅 Early Morning
The city’s still sleepy. Streets are quieter, the air’s crisp, and you’ll often have locations to yourself. It’s a great time for soft, diffused light, especially in the cooler months.

🌞 Midday
This is when the sun’s highest and harshest. Shadows get deep, light gets sharp and not always the most flattering on skin (think squinty eyes and blown-out highlights). If we do shoot around this time, shady spots like arcades or under tree cover work best.

🌇 Late Afternoon to Evening
That dreamy golden hour glow starts about an hour before sunset. It wraps around you like honey, softens everything, and gives skin the most beautiful warmth. It’s hands-down the best light for outdoor sessions and if we stick around after the sun dips, we might even catch some magic in the twilight.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind Before Choosing Your Location

  1. Check for Local Events
Melbourne loves a pop-up market or protest especially on weekends. Always check if something’s happening at or near your chosen location (Fed Square, Carlton Gardens and Fitzroy Gardens are common ones!). It can save us from a surprise crowd or parking chaos.
  2. Dress to Match the Mood
Think about what you’re wearing in relation to where we’re going. Soft, earthy colours look beautiful in nature. Bolder colours or clean silhouettes pop in urban settings. You don’t need to match, just aim to complement each other and the surroundings.
  3. Getting There Smoothly
Some places are a breeze with parking like Red Bluff (watch out in summer) or Abbotsford Convent. Others, like Fitzroy Gardens or anywhere in the CBD, might need a bit of planning. Whether you’re driving or taking public transport.
  4. Your Comfort Comes First
Love a little adventure? Or do you prefer somewhere quiet and still? Let that guide your choice. The best photos happen when you’re relaxed and in your element.

Melbourne gives us so many ways to tell your story, wild or quiet, gritty or graceful, in the thick of the city or out near the cliffs. Whatever feels most like you, we’ll find it together. Need more ideas or want to start dreaming up your session? Dive into my location blogs here:
