Double Proposal Melbourne

I’ve photographed a lot of proposals over the years, but this one managed to surprise absolutely everyone involved… including me.

A few weeks before the big day, Paola got in touch with a plan to surprise Sophie with a proposal at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne. We spent some time chatting through ideas and eventually settled on a simple plan near Guilfoyle’s Volcano, one of my favourite areas of the gardens.

The idea was that Paola and Sophie would be out for a walk with their dog Frankie while I casually approached them and asked if I could take a few photos of their very photogenic pup. From there, I’d guide them to a quiet spot in the gardens for a quick photo.

Simple. Easy. Foolproof.

At least that’s what we all thought.

When the girls arrived, everything was going perfectly. Frankie played his role beautifully, Sophie had no idea what was about to happen, and we wandered over to a quiet spot overlooking the gardens.

As soon as I finished taking a few photos, Paola reached into her bag and pulled out a ring box.

Sophie was completely surprised.

For about three seconds.

Because before Paola could even finish her proposal, Sophie reached into her own bag and pulled out a ring box too.

Not just any ring box. An almost identical ring box.

Suddenly what was meant to be a surprise proposal turned into a surprise double proposal, and I don’t think any of us could quite believe what was happening.

The laughter, the tears, the complete shock on both their faces. It was one of those moments that felt almost too perfect to have planned.

As it turns out, both Paola and Sophie had secretly decided that this was the right time to propose and had been carrying rings around waiting for the perfect opportunity.

The fact that they chose the exact same day without either of them knowing still feels incredible.

Once the excitement settled and both rings were officially on fingers, we spent some time wandering through the Royal Botanic Gardens together.

One of the things I love most about photographing in the gardens is how many beautiful little pockets you can discover just by taking a short walk. We explored some of my favourite spots, found gorgeous light filtering through the trees, and captured plenty of relaxed, fun moments along the way.

There was lots of laughing, plenty of “I still can’t believe that just happened” conversations, and more than a few moments where the girls caught themselves staring at their new rings.

The whole session felt less like a photoshoot and more like documenting one of those days you’ll tell stories about for the rest of your life.

After our walk through the gardens, Paola and Sophie headed off to celebrate with a special dinner nearby, giving them a chance to soak in everything that had just happened.

Paola and Sophie, thank you for trusting me with such an unforgettable moment. What started as a carefully planned surprise proposal turned into one of the most unique and joyful proposals I’ve ever had the privilege of photographing.

And Frankie, if you’re reading this, you absolutely nailed your role too.
