Embracing Rainy Days: A Guide for Your Photography Session in Melbourne

Melbourne weather likes to keep us on our toes. One minute it’s sunshine, the next it’s pouring. If you’ve got a photography session booked and the forecast shows rain, don’t panic, there are still plenty of ways to make it work, whether you reschedule, embrace the drizzle, or find a cosy undercover spot.

1: Rescheduling is Always an Option

If the weather looks truly wild, we’re talking sideways rain or howling wind your photographer will likely be happy to reschedule. Especially if your session is outdoors and the conditions just won’t be comfortable. Chat through some backup dates and make sure there’s a little flexibility in both your schedules, just in case.

2: Embrace the Rain

A light shower or a bit of drizzle? Don’t be afraid to lean into it. Rain can actually add a dreamy, romantic feel to your photos — reflections on the pavement, misty skies, that moody cinematic look. Bring clear or colourful umbrellas, a cute raincoat, or even go barefoot and splash around. It might not be what you imagined, but it can be even more beautiful — and a little more “you”.

Come Prepared If you decide to go ahead, be ready:

  • Bring umbrellas — clear ones photograph beautifully, or go bold with colours that pop.
  • Wear weather-friendly shoes or bring a spare pair to change into.
  • Pack a towel or two, just in case.
  • Think about waterproof makeup or a quick-fix kit to keep you feeling fresh.

3: Plan B: Covered & Indoor Locations in Melbourne

There are plenty of stunning, dry alternatives around Melbourne if you need a plan B. Some of my favourites include:

  • The Glasshouse at St Kilda Botanical Gardens – A sweet, lush hideaway with gorgeous diffused light.
  • Carlton Gardens & Royal Exhibition Building – Even if it’s raining, the grand walkways and covered verandahs make for elegant, sheltered shots.
  • State Library of Victoria (outside under the colonnades) – Classical architecture, dramatic lines, and good cover.
  • Royal Arcade & Block Arcade – Iconic, historic arcades with beautiful tiling, arched windows, and lots of charm — all under cover.
  • Your Home or AirBnB – Personal spaces can be just as meaningful. A cosy kitchen bench, your favourite window, or even the front porch can tell your story in a more intimate way.
  • Fed Square – Covered areas with a glass walled atrium and dramatic lighting.
  • Parliament House Steps – Those iconic grand steps and towering columns are completely covered and bring a sense of drama and elegance to any shoot.
  • Underpass Murals and Laneways – Some laneways stay relatively dry and offer character and grit.
  • Boutique Hotel Lobbies or Rooms – Many have stylish, photogenic interiors and are often happy to accommodate a quick shoot if you’re staying there.

4: Stay Lighthearted

At the end of the day, rain might nudge your plans in a slightly different direction, but that doesn’t mean the magic is lost. Sometimes, the best memories (and the best photos) are the unplanned ones. Stay flexible, stay dry (or don’t), and trust the process.

Rain or shine, your session will still be full of warmth, laughter, and the kinds of moments that matter.
