Months ago, my inbox pinged with a special request. Mark, a lovely guy from Canberra, had a beautiful plan brewing for his upcoming trip to Melbourne with his girlfriend, Emma. He envisioned a moment, the moment, amidst the lush greenery of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. Having visited before, Mark felt the secluded tranquility of Fern Gully would be the perfect, intimate setting to propose to Emma. My heart did a little happy dance just hearing about it!
Fast forward to the weeks of the big day, and a little curveball was thrown our way – some new, rather vocal residents (bats) had moved into parts of Fern Gully! A quick scouting mission the weekend before was essential to pinpoint the absolute perfect spot, ensuring Mark and Emma’s special moment remained just that: special and private. I even managed to grab a little video snippet to send Mark, giving him a sneak peek of where the magic would happen.
Then came the morning itself. As I waited, camera in hand, ready to capture the surprise, a school group suddenly appeared, their cheerful chatter echoing through the usually serene Botanic Gardens. My palms got a little sweaty, I won’t lie! The thought of a crowd witnessing this intimate proposal flickered through my mind. But as luck would have it, just as quickly as they arrived, the children moved on, leaving Fern Gully bathed in its peaceful ambiance once more. Phew!
Soon enough, Mark and Emma appeared, strolling hand-in-hand. Following our pre-arranged plan, I approached them with my little “student taking photos” ruse in place. Then, it happened. Mark dropped to one knee, a ring glinting in the dappled sunlight filtering through the ferns, and asked Emma to marry him. It was everything you could hope for – heartfelt, genuine, and utterly perfect. And the best part? She said YES!
The rest of the morning unfolded into a joyful engagement session, wandering through the stunning Melbourne Botanic Gardens, capturing their radiant happiness against the backdrop of nature’s beauty.
